Dry Cupping

Dry Cupping

What is Dry Cupping therapy?

It’s an alternative Chinese medicine which involves placing suction cups made of either glass or silicone on the body and creating a vacuum inside using a suction gun instrument. It is a safe and beneficial technique, which can be used alongside your normal massage routine, or completely on it’s own.

How does dry cupping work?

The treatment increases the blood flow to the trigger points (or sore areas) in the muscles, providing important nutrients to the area that promote healing and cell repair. It also removes stagnant blood and toxins from the muscle. Due to the vacuum effect the soft tissue separates stimulating an inflammatory response which is natural process of healing. The body releases white blood cells, platelets and fibroblasts in response to this which initiates the healing. The soft tissue and fascia is gently stretched during this process, creating a relaxation effect within the muscle, this ultimately results in an improved range of motion and performance.

What are the benefits?

Dry cupping has many benefits including loosening muscles, encouraging blood flow, and sedating the nervous system.

It can be used to treat:

Back and neck pains

Stiff muscles

Stress and anxiety

What are the side effects?

The treatment can cause marks on the skin. This is purely due to the blood being drawn to the surface. The marks should disappear over a week or so, depending on the client. Over repeated treatment, the marking will decrease as stagnation resolves.

What are the side effects?

It is recommended that anyone suffering from bleeding disorders such as hemophilia or who are being treated with anticoagulants do not undergo treatment. As with hot stones treatment, pregnant women or children should also refrain from receiving dry cupping.

We also a range of other treatments including sports massage, dry needling and deep tissue massage which may help too.
